Linden Lab recently undertook a survey on the use and acceptance of voice in Second Life. It’s well documented how some in Second Life use and voice, while many feel it shatters some elements of the immersive experience.
Linden Lab’s approach to the future of voice was discussed at a recent Linden Lab press briefing. Joe Miller, Linden Labs Vice President of Platform and Technology Ddevelopment said, “The survey results aren’t fully compiled yet, but its clear that many users who rejected voice early on would reconsider if voice morphing technologies were available. Together with Vivox we are developing our own voice morphing technology which we consider to be substantially better than many of the other products out there. We want people to design their own voice.”
Apparently this technology will be in “beta stages” within coming months.
This could be an interesting development for voice in Second Life. If voice itself could become a palette for creative design in the same way as the avatar perhaps it could be embraced as an extension of immersion, rather than a barrier to it? But if we think of the good site, we should think of the bad 1 as well. There is a great possibility of even more laggs on the servers and a even bigger chaos.
Hopefully all will go as planned and we'll have the feature debugged.
