ImageLYONET - Healing Hands Hospice exists in Second Life to serve as a center of information and support for those dealing with life-threatening illness and loss. It is free and open to all individuals with major illness, and their families and friends who are dealing with this transition. Kaznats Oh, an ICU nurse and Leigh Perry, a hospice nurse opened the hospice in November 2007. Both experienced the social isolation of their clients and it bothered them. When they discovered SL, they constructed the Healing Hands in SL to help socialize and educate those who were terminally ill, as well as their friends and family. Perry and Oh consider this an experiment. They wish to see if virtual support while homebound will reduce re-hospitalization of hospice patients. If so, billions of dollars can be saved and channeled into preventative medical programs. The group is being considered for a grant now from a Canadian source. If approved, the grant plans to bring in 250 clients to see if the hospice can reduce both stress and re-hospitalization.
